President-elect Trump has indicated he would announce his selection of his nominee for secretary of state next week. The nomination must be confirmed by the Senate, which will have a Republican majority in the next Congress.

Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson would be the first secretary of state to come up through the ranks of the private sector since former President Ronald Reagan tapped George Shultz, former executive vice president of engineering giant Bechtel, to serve as his top diplomat.

The Wall Street Journal said Trump was attracted to Tillerson because the 64-year-old was a “mold-breaking pick who would bring an executive’s experience to the diplomatic role.”
