In 2005, a Republican controlled Congress and Republican President betrayed the American people and passed – signed a very dangerous piece of legislation that has George Orwell’s ‘Big Brother’ written all over it. Known as the REAL ID Act, it was allegedly passed as a national security issue to standardize all official forms of state and federal identifications. Supposedly, the REAL ID’s would help prevent terrorists from boarding commercial aircraft or military bases in the US.
One of the main aspects of this insidious piece of legislation is to establish federal standards for issuing state driver’s licenses and non-driver forms of identification. Federally accepted driver’s licenses are also known as ‘enhanced driver’s licenses’. According to the Department of Homeland Security:
“Enhanced driver’s licenses make it easier for U.S. citizens to cross the border into the United States because they include
- a vicinity Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip that will signal a secure system to pull up your biographic and biometric data for the CBP officer as you approach the border inspection booth, and
- a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) or barcode that the CBP officer can read electronically if RFID isn’t available.”
